NRA CERTIFIED RANGE SAFETY OFFICER COURSE AT DAVENPORT GUN CLUB
WHY TAKE THE RSO COURSE?
Although the term “Range Safety Officer” or “RSO” may be intimidating, this course is simply a comprehensive firearm safety and safe handling course — don’t let the title scare you. Whether it’s a trip to the local range, a hunting expedition, plinking on the back forty, or teaching a friend how to shoot, we are responsible for our own safety and the safety of those we are shooting with. With nearly 400 million firearms in America, responsible citizens need to know how to safely handle and store firearms and know how to organize, conduct and supervise safe shooting activities. Also, many ranges and shooting organizations are in desperate need of volunteer Range Safety Officers.
WHO CAN TAKE THE COURSE?
This is course is a coed course — both men and women are welcome. The NRA Range Safety Officer Course is a great starting place for those new to firearm ownership and shooting and it is a great place for the advanced shooter or long-time gun owner to brush up on range procedures, range commands, hone strategies for working with new shooters, and range etiquette. There’s no minimum age, skill, or experience required to take the course.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT OUT OF THE COURSE?
This is a hands on, non-live fire course with numerous practical exercises designed to allow students to experience many different firearm action types and participate in practical exercises to prepare for the RSO role. Students will learn how to properly take control of firearms on the firing line and how to safely clear stoppages and malfunctions. Students will receive coaching and feedback on the practical exercises conducted during the course. RSOs ensure that shooters follow firearm safety rules and, if shooting at an established range, the range’s rules and regulations in order to reduce property damage and personal injury. The NRA encourages active shooters to learn more and become responsible for the safety of fellow shooters through this program.
